So, I received an inquiry from a fan about a particular place in Once Upon a Time's season 1 "Pilot" episode. This viewer noticed a strange shadowy figure flying over the side of a building in Storybrooke as Emma and Henry get in her yellow bug after speaking with Archie. The viewer asked, what is this shadow? What is its significance on the show? Is it an idea the producers had but then didn't follow through on? What were my ideas on this new-found, possible character?
So, I quickly found the place in the episode this viewer mentioned (approximately 17 and a half minutes into the episode) and discovered this...
(Skip to 4:58-5:03. Watch the building in the upper right corner of the screen)

Strange and very interesting! However, I personally don't believe it was any intention of the producers/directors/OUAT team for the shadow to be there. Given the nature that it was the pilot episode, with sets still being perfected and feeling out the surroundings to make this show as great as it is, it was probably just a goof. Most likely it was caused by movement of an object beyond the parameters of the frame, and as we all know, shadows can be caused by things far away and up close. Even if the producers/directors noticed it, they most likely relied on the psychological effect TV watchers and film goers have: "inattentional blindness" - that we would be so engrossed in Emma's and Henry's conversation that we would not notice that little mishaps in the background.
I will admit to this particular reader/fan that I did not notice the shadow until after she pointed it out to me. So thank you for that very interesting "Did You Catch It" moment. Great eye!
For all of you out there who are fans of the show, I love hearing from you and seeing the show from new perspectives! As always, drop me a comment/question in my comment box or click on the link below. Enjoy and catch you soon!
